History Behind name Thanjavur

Thanjavur was the royal city of the Cholas, Nayaks and the Mahrattas. Thanjavur derives its name from Tanjan, a demon, who according to legends devastated the neighbourhood and was killed by Sri Anandavalli Amman and Vishnu, Sri Neelamegapperumal. Tanjan's last request that the city be named after him. Thanjavur has since long been the center of classical art and music. It has produced many classical musicians and dancers. It is also well known for its unique style of painting called Tanjore Paintings. There are beautiful temples here and is worth visit. The temples display intricate architecture and shows off the talent and prowess of the ages gone by.
